Coyotes File $23 Billion Claim Against Phoenix Over Arena

April 5, 2023

Coyotes Find an Answer to Arena Issues

PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) – The Arizona Coyotes filed a $23 billion claim against the city of Phoenix on Wednesday, alleging that the city breached its contract to build a new arena for the team.

The claim, which was filed in Maricopa County Superior Court, alleges that the city failed to meet its obligations under a 2013 agreement to build a new arena for the Coyotes by the start of the 2022-23 season. The Coyotes have been playing their home games at Gila River Arena in Glendale since 2003, but have been seeking a new arena for several years.

The city and the Coyotes have been in negotiations for a new arena for several years, but those talks have been repeatedly delayed. In 2019, the city and the Coyotes reached an agreement on a new arena, but that deal was later scuttled by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Coyotes are now seeking $23 billion in damages from the city, alleging that the city's breach of contract has caused the team to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. The team is also seeking a court order requiring the city to build a new arena.

The city has not yet responded to the Coyotes' claim.
